How Media Talk 101 began...
Media Talk 101 was started in December of 2005 by Phillip Telfer with the goal of teaching media discernment to youth and families. Phillip's passion about this subject started shortly after he surrendered his life to Christ at 17 years old. He began to see the impact that entertainment had on his own life and the lives of those around him. Having experienced apprehension from other Christians about his personal media convictions, he kept quiet for the most part until he began to work full time as a youth pastor many years later.
It didn't take long to realize that the impact from entertainment on youth culture and even adult society had become exponentially worse. After working nearly five years with youth on a full time basis, Phillip came across a ministry that was looking for speakers to tackle the subject in youth groups, schools and conferences. He inquired about becoming part of the team and was invited to be one of 30 national speakers.
That ministry closed its doors after two years and Phillip felt there was a need to continue addressing the subject. Not necessarily wishing to go out as an independent youth speaker, he was impressed by the Lord to start an organization that would seek to raise the bar of media discernment in the church.
He began by writing a book in order to organize his own thoughts on the subject as well as provide a resource to share the heart of his message. After finishing the book he used the written material as a foundation for developing a multimedia presentation geared to youth and families.
